Rooted in the South Asian celebration of spring, the vibrant dance of kites against the sky symbolizes freedom, festivity, and the changing of seasons. At Cork Basant Festival, families and individuals of all ages are invited to take part in this exhilarating activity. Whether you're an expert flyer or a first-time participant, you'll find joy in watching your kite soar high among dozens of others, creating a breathtaking canvas of colour.
āļø Kite-Making Workshop & Exhibition
Before you fly, create! Join our interactive kite-making workshops guided by artists Kim-Ling Morris and Riki Matsuda. Kids and adults alike can craft their own unique kites using eco-friendly and recycled materials. Donāt forget to submit your creations between 2pmā3pm for our Kite Exhibition in the Carrigaline Community Complex!
Kim-Lingās installation features fish-shaped kites inspired by Japanese koinoburi, made by students of GaelcholĆ”iste Mhuire, blending Japanese and Irish symbolism. This āShoal Projectā beautifully ties together cultures through creativity and sustainable art.

Art Exhibitions: Discover stunning pieces from local artists and student collaborations, including the innovative āShoalā project by artist Kim-Ling Morris, featuring koinoburi (carp fish kites) made from recycled materials.

š“ Food Stalls & The Iconic Mango Party
Savor the flavors of South Asia at the Basant Festivalās diverse food stalls, offering a delicious array of traditional dishes and street foods that bring the vibrant tastes of the region right to Carrigaline. From spicy snacks to sweet treats, thereās something to delight every palate.
Highlighting the culinary celebration is the Iconic Mango Party in the Carrigaline Community Complex Kitchen. Mango, known as the āKing of Fruitsā holds a special place in South Asian culture, and this fun-and-learn event celebrates its cultural significance and the signature yellow color of Basant.
Organized by Sana Asam and sponsored by Spice Garden, the Mango Party is a unique opportunity to experience mangoes in creative ways, guided by community experts, with special guest Cllr. Audrey Buckley attending on behalf of the Mayor of Cork County.
